This is a general election which will result in the election of Members of Parliament (MPs).

Purdah is referred to as the period of time between the announcement of an election and the election itself. This period means that the government can not announce new or controversial policies or initiatives which could be advantageous for candidates standing for the governing party. This is because the use of government machinery would give an unfair advantage to ruling party candidates.

You have until 22 May 2017 to register to vote.

Electors must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years of age or over.
  • A British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland.
  • Not be subject to any legal incapacity to vote.

Polling stations open at 7am and are open until 10pm. You will be allowed to vote if you are in the polling station (or the queue to get into the polling station) by 10pm.
